"In our Filmmakers for the Featured series, we are thrilled to introduce Studio Birthplace, a creative studio that has redefined how impactful storytelling connects with global audiences." - Filmmakers World
Filmmakers World has showcased Studio Birthplace in their 'Filmmakers for the Featured' series, which features an in-depth interview with co-founders Sil van der Woerd and Jorik Dozy.
Some snippets from the interview below:
Q: How did Studio Birthplace come to life, and what inspired you to focus on environmental and social storytelling?
A: Studio Birthplace was founded from a great sense of urgency as we (Jorik and Sil) became more aware of the all-encompassing climate crisis and 6th mass extinction we are in. At the time we were working in Hollywood on visual effects for films such as Star Wars and The Avengers when we started to ask ourselves; how can we use our skills to tell stories for our planet and make real, positive change?
Making entertainment is one thing, but when we look at our world, we felt there are so many more important stories to tell, stories that define the future of all of us on this planet. This became the mission of the studio – with every project we ask ourselves the question: does this improve our world? From the climate crisis to biodiversity loss and pollution, we focus on telling Earth’s most urgent stories.

Q: What’s Next for Studio Birthplace? What challenges do you foresee as you continue to push boundaries and expand your vision?
A: Our goal is to be a leading global creative studio for pro-planet and sustainability work both in short and long-form storytelling. Furthermore, we’re excited to expand our voice by engaging in more public speaking and hope to work more with policy and lawmakers to help bridge the communications gap between government, science, and the public.
This is where storytellers can make a huge difference – bringing critically important science to the public and the policymakers through stories, making it relatable and easier to understand. We want to create more work that not only inspires but drives important tangible action.
As the world feels more divided and the political landscape is ever-shifting, environmental efforts are often the first to be cut. It’s critical the world is put on track towards net-zero emissions and that it’s done fast. We hope to contribute towards this and keep telling stories that matter to ignite change.
